About us

About Dark Eyes Performance Lab

Dark Eyes Performance Lab uses the eyes of Subcomandante Marcos, leader of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) as their symbol, drawing on the emblematic significance of his “revolutionary spirit.”  And the founder of Dark Eyes Performance Lab, Hung Hung, is a revolutionary figure as well in terms of his multiple identities as a poet, a film and theatre director, a curator as well as an art critic.  He founded Dark Eyes Performance Lab in 2009.

Theatre is the main focus of Dark Eyes Performance Lab and its means to bridge the gap between artistic experiment and the preference of general public through a wide range of cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural performance arts.  With years of experiences in small-scale experimental theatre, Dark Eyes Performance Lab is now producing and promoting larger shows to introduce the world-famous plays as well as to cultivate new generation of talents in Taiwan.

Dark Eyes Performance Lab creates performances that address social issues and taboos.  By using the language of popular culture, it attempts to break barriers in performing arts.  Notable works include: The Ugly One , Jump! BIG Girl! and Winnie the Boob- these works challenge modern culture’s emphasis on outer appearances.  Blackbird was a piece re-evaluated revaluation of the judgment of immoral behavior.  Electronic City touched upon issue of capitalism and globalization.  Taiwan 365 -- Eternity of a Day and Alive and Kicking, as well as Das Zauberhaus: The Terrace and The Phantom of Liberty employed magic realism to record and reiterate the local history of events and people of contemporary Taiwan.

In addition, the Lab focuses on providing young artists a platform for conducting their creative works and organized theatre festivals to help fill a gap in Taiwan’s performing arts scene.  Through a wide array of themes and forms, such as A Tribute to Modern Theater, The Square Root of Passersby, The Poetry of Gods, and Faaaaat Festival, it expands the horizons of creative works.  With the hearty support of the Lab, many emerging artists, including Chen Ya-Rou, Liao Jin-Wang, Chen Xiao-Jie, Huang Yu-Qing, Jian Li-Ying,  and Li Ming-Chen, are able to collaborate, create and curate incredible works together.

Aside from adapting and showcasing representative contemporary plays from the West, the Performance Lab also invites well-known theatre groups from aboard.  Among them, Ryuzanji Company, the studio of Japanese playwright Sho Ryuzanji, was invited to perform the piece High Life for the first time in Taiwan.  In 2012, Tibetan singer, Kelsang Chukie Tethong, Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts and the group of the Gu-Chu-Sum Movement from Dharamsala were also invited to perform in Taiwan.  We also helped introduce Hong Kong’s Jumping Frames Dance Video Festival to Taiwan in hopes of expanding the scope of local performing arts.

In 2014, Dark Eyes Performance Lab will continue to promote its revolutionary spirit and collaborate with a wide range of local theatre groups and artists from various fields to create a Taiwanese version of Der Ring des Nibelungen: A Revolution Unarmed, which will encompass a multifaceted undertaking, such as performances, exhibitions, seminars, and so on. Sponsored by the National Culture and Arts Foundation under the “Pursuit of Excellence Project for the Performing Arts,” this collaborative project will demonstrate the grand vision and creative aspiration of the theatre scene.

In the future, Dark Eyes Performance Lab will hold fast to the principle of fostering an encouraging environment for creativity, continue to produce a wide diversity of performances, and aspire to create an Asian perspective, a lens through which we can view the whole world.
